Tips for Making a Loud HVAC System Run Quieter

Does it seem like your air conditioner is running louder than it should? If so, it’s a definite possibility that’s exactly what is happening. You may be tempted to treat this as completely normal and just adjust to the louder operation. But you don’t have to.

Instead, you can take some steps to help your loud air conditioner run a little more quietly. If your HVAC system was incorrectly sized for your home’s HVAC installation in Petersburg, IN, an oversized or undersized system will make more noise. You can keep reading to learn more about why your air conditioner may be running loud and what you can do about it.

Schedule a Service Appointment

If your air conditioner is too loud, the first step to addressing the problem is scheduling professional service. Our team really needs to check out the system and make sure that there is not something wrong. Sometimes issues inside the unit can lead to louder than normal operation.

If there are any problems, like a capacitor that needs to be replaced, we can make those adjustments and see if you notice an improvement. If not, we may need to take other steps.

Soundproofing Options

Some air conditioners are simply louder when they operate compared to others. Or maybe you are more sensitive to sound and the operation bothers you. In this case, we can soundproof your air conditioner so that it doesn’t cause irritation. For the indoor portion of your unit, you can either insulate the interior of the closet or purchase a special soundproofing blanket that is specifically designed for air conditioners.

These blankets are breathable to still allow airflow while helping to muffle loud operational noises. The soundproofing blankets can also be purchased for your outdoor unit if it is the problem. Of course, you want to make sure you purchase a soundproofing blanket specifically designed for an AC unit so you don’t accidentally cause an interruption to airflow.

Install a Smaller Unit

Many times, an air conditioner can sound unusually loud because it is too large for the space it is trying to cool. We can analyze the size of your air conditioner and the square footage of your home and our climate zone to determine if the unit was sized correctly. If it wasn’t, when the time comes to upgrade your unit, you may want to invest in a smaller model.

You may not want to switch out your existing AC for a smaller model if it’s still fairly new. Usually, an AC has a manufacturer’s warranty for the first ten years. Within that period, it may make sense to maintain your existing larger unit instead of overhauling it with a new system.

When it is time to upgrade, we can help you choose a properly sized model that will cool your home effectively without being as loud. This can also help to boost energy efficiency and save you on monthly energy costs. Aside from being louder, a large unit can also consume more energy compared to a unit that better fits the cooling needs of your space.
