How Can You Protect Your HVAC Ductwork?

The ductwork that attaches to your HVAC system is fragile. It shifts around easily and can be damaged if it is bumped or moved, ultimately allowing cool air to leak out. Ideally, you want to schedule duct services once every three years to address these problems.

But you can also take preventive steps to keep your ductwork in great shape in between those services. Keep reading to learn more about the ways that you can help your ductwork remain airtight, secure, and working at its best. Then give our team a call when you’re ready to schedule duct cleaning in Petersburg, IN.

Maintain Space

One of the best ways to protect your ductwork is to maintain a good amount of space around it. If you store things in your attic where the ductwork is located, keep those boxes and other items away from the ducts. If you are moving around in your attic, be careful to stay away from the ductwork so you don’t bump it or damage it accidentally.

Schedule Professional Services

We usually recommend that you schedule duct services every three to five years. These services include an inspection, cleaning, and then repairing anything that needs to be fixed. In some cases, we may also have to replace sections of your ductwork or shift it around to better meet your heating and cooling needs.

During that initial assessment, we determine the severity of damage and identify the overall needs. If your ductwork is particularly dirty, we can sanitize it in addition to wiping down the interior surfaces and vacuuming away dust buildup.

After that, we seal your ductwork and pressurize it to identify areas of concern. If there are holes where the delicate material was damaged, we can identify those places to repair or replace them. We can do the same for broken seals where joints connect together.

After we repair your ductwork, it will once again be airtight and completely secure. Over the months and years, it may develop problem areas again, but that is completely normal as a part of the system aging. We can continue to monitor how your ductwork is doing during annual AC maintenance appointments and let you know when it’s time to schedule a specific service for your ducts again.

Prioritize the Air Filter

The air filter is the one thing that protects the inside of your HVAC system and the attached ductwork. When you invest in a great air filter, you prevent dust from getting inside the system and causing problems, like poor indoor air quality.

After selecting a great filter you also want to be sure you know how frequently to change it out. Some filters are rated to last for a month, while others can be in place for longer. The overall indoor air quality of your home is also a factor that affects when you should change the filter out.

Having children and pets that track dirt inside may mean that you have to change the filter a little sooner than you otherwise would. Replacing a dirty filter with a new one a little early can go a long way in protecting your HVAC ductwork.
