4 Signs That It’s Time to Schedule HVAC Repairs

If you’ve used your heating system for the first time this fall, you probably have a good idea of how well it is working. With the long heating season ahead, it’s important to be aware of signs that indicate your HVAC system is struggling and needs professional attention. Give our team a call to schedule HVAC repair in Petersburg, IN. No matter what is wrong, we can troubleshoot and figure out the problem and then provide a prompt repair.

Unusual Sounds

If your HVAC system begins to make any unusual sounds, something is causing a problem with operation. In the case of a heat pump, you may hear persistent clicking or humming because the unit is struggling to turn on.

It’s also possible that you hear rattling from parts inside of the system being loose or banging and knocking sounds if larger components are loose. Fan blades can make a scraping sound as they swipe against metal sides during operation.

When it comes to heaters and furnaces, there are other sounds to listen for. A loud boom inside a gas furnace during ignition can indicate that there is too much gas during the ignition process. Rumbling sounds indicate that your furnace needs maintenance. Perhaps the air filter needs to be changed out or the inside chambers need to be wiped down.

Bad Smells

If there’s a bad odor somewhere in your home, it can easily get sucked into your HVAC system and distributed through the ductwork and out of the vents in each room. But if you notice unexplained bad odors, your HVAC system itself may be to blame. If it smells like something is burning, it’s possible that the HVAC system is overheating.

However, the smell of burning dust can be normal when you turn a heating system on for the first time after not using it for a while. But if the smell persists for more than a few hours, turn it off immediately and schedule service. You don’t want to risk electrical problems starting a fire or a component overheating and doing damage to other parts of the system or the rest of your home.

Another bad odor to pay attention to is one that’s damp or musty. If your HVAC system smells like this, mold could be growing somewhere inside. In this case, you want to schedule service as soon as you can to identify the problem and catch it before the mold spreads too far.

It’s also possible that the damp odor is just beginning and mold has not yet started to develop inside the system. Whatever is causing the problem needs to be addressed before the problem worsens.

Energy Costs

It’s important to understand that energy costs can fluctuate from month to month and season to season. For example, your home may be slightly more expensive to heat during the winter since we face extremely low temperatures. On the other hand, summertime may be less expensive.

Other than that, you should not see major fluctuations in your energy costs unless you adjust how you use your HVAC system. Sudden changes or persistent trends upward point to issues that are hiding inside of the system and need to be addressed.
